It was the seat of the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, the capital of the Austrian Empire and the Austro-Hungarian monarchy when it reached its peak at the end of the 19th century and with about 2,000,000 inhabitants was the fourth largest city in the world (after London, Paris and New York). , a river port, industrial and commercial center connected with the Czech, Hungarian and South Slavic countries. After a period of decline, due to two world wars and the occupation of the city by Allied forces, Vienna is taking over the old functions of a shopping center that has good relations with Eastern European countries, a university, cultural and tourist center that hosts participants in international conferences and congresses. Today, Vienna is one of the most important congress centers in the world and the seat of many international institutions, the most important of which are the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), and one of the four centers of the United Nations. The city is, among other things, one of the most popular European destinations for tourists from all over the world, but also for immigrants who, especially in recent years, make up a large share of the city's population. Millions of tourists visit the city every year, mostly thanks to numerous cultural and historical monuments, palaces and a diverse cultural offer. Vienna also bears the epithet of the music capital of the world in which composers such as Mozart or Beethoven lived and worked, and one of the most important cultural centers of the old continent.
