Trieste (Italian: Trieste, Slovenian: Trieste, Hungarian: Trieszt and German: Trieste) is an important city and port in Italy on the Adriatic coast with 208,815 inhabitants, near the border with Slovenia. The city is the center of the eponymous district of Trieste and the province of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. According to Archimandrite Nikola Dučić (1868), the name of the town was derived from the Slavic word "Trstika", i.e. reeds, which abound there, on the seashore.
Today, Trieste is the only city in Italy on the east coast of the Adriatic, very close to Slovenia and Croatia. The city is a kind of "Italian outpost" for Southeast Europe. There is still a significant Slovenian national minority in Trieste, and there are living traces of other South Slavic peoples (Serbs, Croats) in the city.
Trieste is also one of the most important ports on the northern coast of the Mediterranean. It used to be the "imperial port of the Habsburgs", and today it is the most important seaport for inland Austria.
Geography
Trieste is located in the extreme northeastern part of Italy, on the border with Slovenia, which surrounds the city from the south and east. In the west is the Adriatic, and in the north a close connection with the rest of Italy. The city is 670 km away from the capital Rome, and only 95 km from the first major city, Slovenian Ljubljana.
Relief
Trieste developed in the extreme northern part of the Adriatic Sea. The city is located at the place where the last hills of the Dinaric Mountains descend towards the Po Valley in the west. The fall of the coastal hills towards the sea is very sudden, so most of the city is very hilly. The only city center is located in a small coastal plain. In the vicinity of the city there are many areas with pronounced karst forms of relief.
Climate
The climate in Trieste has changed the Mediterranean climate with a significant influence from the continental North. Therefore, winters are harsher and summers are milder than in other parts of Italy. This collision of the climate is also read in very strong winds (bora).
